Situational Homosexuality in Male Otaku

Allegations of situational homosexuality are surprisingly prevalent amongst male anime otaku, despite – or perhaps because of – stereotypical perceptions that they are infrequently involved in sexual activity. Let us examine one incident:

Springtime for Moe

Dear Haruhi-sama,

Moe debates are the Godwin’s Law of anime.  Please look kindly upon the poor blogging masses and forgive us our doubt.

janaiblog Dear God, another fucking moe debate is a-brewing. Signing off.

Gundampilotspaz Guys it’s too early for a Moe debate.

TheLostHorizon There’s a moe debate going on?  What is being debated? The standard “moe is ruining anime” debate?

nightdreamer any chances this thing about moe debates involve that Colony Drop site?

Thedigitalbug Moe is ruining our lives. Discuss. j/k

jlskun I’m watching K-On!! against my better judgment. Shoot me now and put me out of my misery.

timmaughan @moritheil @janaiblog @Gundampilotspaz I’m not taking the blame for this one, I was asked a direct question by @TheGinachu. BLAME HER.

TheGinachu @janaiblog @timmaughan DON’T BLAME ME! LOL I was just adding to the conversation. I said nothing negative about moe.

As if that were not enough, the true, horrifying form of the abyss was synthesized by halcy:  part Godwin’s Law, part moe debate, all atrocity.

@moritheil You know who else thought that Yui was more moe than Mio? That’s right. HITLER.

Truth is stranger than moe

There is no lack of requests to feature people on TMR, but generally those requests don’t originate from the person in question.  Also, they generally don’t involve 4chan threads.

JacobMartin @moritheil: Could you help me out here, 4chan won’t believe I’m not trolling: http://boards.4chan.org/adv/res/356454

JacobMartin @moritheil: It’s not that they think I’m a troll that offends me, they think I’m ALWAYS trolling. Feature this on your dorama site please.

Listen, I’m not shitting you about this. But I feel bad that in Year 8 this girl I used to really like but who made fun of me made a childhood promise that if I got three basketball hoops in, she’d marry me.

It gets more interesting when I mention that I delivered said b-ball hoops. She was humiliated in front of her friends who were using this girl to bully me, and ever since I’ve felt bad because I’ve never really talked to her after that since I moved schools and she never replies to my IMs even though she claims to be online.

She’s one of those girls who would be what used to be a female version of me, very passive in getting what she wants and not talking to people much/feeling sorry for herself.

I’m no creep, and I’m not going to hold her responsible for a childhood promise she made at an impressionable junior high age just because I want some kind of anime romance RL story. I mean childhood promises in real life are freaking rare, but I’m not willing to put myself through a lot of crap for a girl who probably doesn’t like me.

And yet I’d feel bad for telling her that the “wedding is off” even though we never dated, because I feel sorry for her. The idea that she’s lonely somewhere breaks my heart, because I know how it feels. All the same, she had her chance and I don’t want to feel responsible for her actions.

Advice?

I turned twenty years old in January. And yes, diagnosed by a doctor. One of the main reasons she and her friends bullied me was because of the results of said diagnosis.

The review that cried moe

Miha at Ex-Wota has found an ANN review objectionable.  After looking over the review, I have to say there is indeed something amiss.

The girls themselves offer a standard moe personality distribution. Young Kureha is the resident tsundere type; Kanata is the innocent, enthusiastic, starry-eyed newcomer; Felicia is the faultlessly nice one; Noel is the reserved, minimally-speaking one; and Rio is the hard-edged but still compassionate one. Nothing particularly fresh or exciting here, unfortunately.

The problem with ANN’s review is that those archetypes aren’t moe archetypes. They’re present in war stories going back centuries.

Sub out those names and this could easily describe any video game or movie that tells the story of fresh recruits mixed with a unit of grizzled veterans.  Plenty of military tales, for instance, had “the guy who doesn’t speak much” as a stock character, or “the guy who acts tough and ungrateful but actually thinks of the unit as his family.”  People don’t ask for fresh or exciting there. They ask for identifiable characters so they can get right to the business of the story.

Isn’t Sora no Woto a military story?  Can’t it get away with reflexively using the same military story cliches that other productions rely on?  And if it can’t, shouldn’t we accurately identify the genre a cliche belongs to?

Fall Season Impressions

The chill of autumn may be setting in outside, but in the realm of the mind, the Aniblogoverse is heating up fiercely!

Not actually from this season.

Over at Dasaku, Zeroblade proves that awesomeness is in the very core of his being by actually reviewing My Girlfriend Is the President.  Though the game is widely regarded as a joke due to its improbable setup (aliens kill important political people and replace them with a moe-moe preteen Japanese girl, then brainwash all of humanity into thinking she’s the president) Zeroblade apparently intends to play it through.  He even throws some social commentary in for good measure.

Glo the legend is reviewing Queen’s Blade 2.  Does that brave man have what it takes?  Can he make it through without being utterly corrupted by the foul miasma of exploding breasts, phallic weapons, and cheap sex?  Have a look at an actual quote:

It was the most random rape ever and I actually laughed quite hard . . . I can’t wait for next week!

He is in his element.

In other news, Doctor NK continues to scour the web for Touhou-related interviews.  Readers will be thrilled to see the ZUN interview, which contains such gems as:

They’re generally drunk, jumping around on different subjects.

ZUN ignores all ideas from outside Japan.

ZUN reads /jp/ and is trolling everyone.

Ray at Anime Diet has been watching the new To Aru, and it does not disappoint.  Reviewers at Aloe Dream and Jinx have been similarly minded.  Ray is, however, also following Queen’s Blade and Kampfer.  How does one man withstand the sheer force of so many shimapan, breasts, and risque poses?  It’s unbelievable, but we have faith in him.  Somehow, he will manage.

Onward, brave soldiers.  Onward to victory.

Shinn87 pens new manifesto

Impurity

Loneliness abounds on Twitter, and with it, improbable pairings. So powerful was shinn87′s earlier suggestion of moe daughters that it struck a chord with many throughout the blogosphere, causing them to muse on love.

“So ronery,” wrote lelangir.  And indeed it seemed that many were looking for love.  Icystorm pondered,

OH LOLOLOL PLAYING WITH YOURSELF? HOW CAN ANYONE GET TIRED OF THAT?

Ghostlightning chimed in:

A note for everyone: @icystorm faps to fruit

WAH sought an alternative:

I should go to the Imouto Cafe and ask for a happy end

Mightyatom decided to board this bandwagon as well:

HEY WEST COASTERS WILL YOU COME TO OTAKON IF I PROMISE TO GOBBLE YOUR KNOBS wow typo
